Hypothetical illustration, not a real account nor a projection of your results.1

The boring, time-tested math built to clock you out years early, for good.

FRED moves a slice of every paycheck into diversified index funds, automatically. No stock picking. No market timing. Just consistency, compounding, and time.

How FRED works

1. Set your target

Tell FRED the monthly income you want to retire on and what you can invest.

2. Every paycheck, FRED invests

A slice of each paycheck goes straight into your diversified index portfolio.

3. Close in on your Freedom Date

Compounding does the heavy lifting while you move toward your Freedom Date.

Can you trust FRED?

  • Your money, your name

Your account will be held in your name at Alpaca Securities LLC, a FINRA/SIPC-member brokerage. If FRED were to shut down tomorrow, your money would still be yours. For more information, see ‘Fair questions’ below.

  • Bank-grade connections

Your bank connection runs through Plaid, the same rails used by major banking apps. Your bank credentials never touch FRED’s servers.

  • Passkeys, not passwords

Sign in with Face ID or your fingerprint. There’s no password to steal, phish, or reuse.

  • Withdraw anytime

Liquid and portable. No lock-ins, no exit fees from FRED, no fine-print hostage-taking.

The “Boglehead” strategy

Own the whole market. Keep fees near zero. Never chase trends. It’s an approach grounded in Nobel Prize-winning research and taught in The Simple Path to Wealth, the million-copy classic of the financial independence movement. Deliberately boring, by design.

Andrew, founder of FRED

Andrew

Founder, FRED

“My father was diagnosed with lung cancer and told he didn't have long. But he kept working, right up until the end, because he never knew how he could afford to stop. He died at 69 and never got to retire. And he had saved. Decades of paychecks into his retirement account. What he never had was a plan to draw it down. FRED exists to teach the strategies he was never shown, so others can have the retirement he never did. You have a choice he didn't get.”

Fair questions

What happens after I join the waitlist?

You’ll get a confirmation email. When your invite is ready, you can claim one of the 300 Founder Access spots, or pass. Nothing is charged unless you claim.

When do I pay the $99?

Only if you’re invited and choose to claim Founder Access. Joining the waitlist costs nothing, today or ever.

Is my money safe if FRED shuts down?

The digital advisory services provided by FRED may be discontinued in accordance with the advisory agreement. If the service ends, FRED will provide notice through the contact information associated with your account and will explain the effective date of termination, the status of pending transactions, the date automated portfolio-management features will stop, and available account-transition options. Your assets are held at Alpaca Securities LLC, subject to the custodian’s terms and procedures. You may generally retain, transfer, or self-direct your custodial account, subject to applicable restrictions and costs. The discontinuation of FRED’s service does not require you to liquidate investments or transfer assets to a successor adviser. Prior to the discontinuation of FRED’s services, your investment will be subject to risks, including the risk that your investment will lose value because of overall changes in the financial markets.

In short: yes, your assets are held at Alpaca Securities LLC, not by FRED, and the end of FRED’s service does not require you to sell or move them.

Why not just buy index funds myself?

You absolutely can. FRED uses plain index funds on purpose. Once registered as an investment adviser, what FRED will add is the automation and the education, working hand in hand. The automation will invest your chosen percentage of each paycheck according to your contribution schedule and will rebalance your portfolio without you placing trades. The education will prepare you for the day you stop investing and start withdrawing: portfolio withdrawal strategies, Monte Carlo simulations that test your plan against thousands of possible market paths, and a clearer understanding of your withdrawal options so you can make informed decisions about the money you have built. Consistency is what the math rewards, and a plan you understand is what keeps you consistent. Our service carries a subscription fee on top of fund expenses and any third-party account charges. Automation and education do not eliminate investment risk or guarantee an earlier retirement, and whether FRED is useful for you depends on your needs and circumstances.

Why is the beta iOS only?

We’re a small team keeping the beta high-touch for every founding member. Starting iOS-only keeps quality high; Android is on the roadmap.

What does FRED cost after the founder offer?

Flat monthly plans starting at $8 and ranging to $40. Never a percentage of your assets. However your portfolio performs, FRED’s fee stays flat.
